Five USHL Alumni Named CCHA All-Rookie

Five USHL alumni were named today to the CCHA All-Rookie Team, as determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches.

Andy Taranto (F) - University of Alaska Fairbanks 

Terry Broadhurst (F) - University of Nebraska-Omaha

Torey Krug (D) - Michigan State University

Joe Hartman (D) - Miami University

Mike Johnson (G) - University of Notre Dame

Andy Taranto, a 21-year-old forward from Chicago, Illinois and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, was chosen as CCM CCHA Rookie of the Month twice and finished the CCHA season with 31 points (12g, 19a).  He was also named CCM CCHA Rookie of the Week three times and captured the freshmen scoring title by 10 points.  He was second in power-play points (14) and fifth in points (31) among all CCHA players.  Taranto was the only unanimous All-Rookie Team selection.  He spent three seasons in the USHL.  Last season, he was selected Second Team All-USHL after tying for the League lead with 34 goals while playing all 60 regular season games for the Fargo Force.   

Terry Broadhurst, a 21-year-old forward from Orland Park, Illinois, and the University of Nebraska-Omaha, had 18 points (9g, 9a) in conference play, placing him in a tie for fifth place in freshmen scoring.  He was named CCM CCHA Rookie of the Week on two occasions and tied for second in game-winning goals among rookies (2), which tied for 12th overall.  He was one of two freshmen to net a hat trick in CCHA play this season.  Broadhurst played two USHL seasons for the Sioux Falls Stampede.  He led the team in scoring with 58 points (27g, 31a) playing in all 60 games during the 2008-09 season.

Torey Krug, an 18-year-old defenseman from Livonia, Michigan, and Michigan State University, led all CCHA rookie rearguards with 16 points, finishing tied for eighth among all rookies and tied for fifth among all CCHA defensemen.  He was named CCM CCHA Rookie of the Week once, CCM CCHA Rookie of the Month twice and National Rookie of the Month once.  In his lone season in the USHL, Krug was named to the All-Rookie Team after ranking second among all League defenseman with 47 points (10g, 37a) in 59 games for the Indiana Ice.  He also helped the Ice capture the Clark Cup and led all players in the postseason with a plus-11 rating.  

Joe Hartman, a 20-year-old defenseman from St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Miami University, placed second among rookie defensemen and 15th among all CCHA freshmen with 10 points.  He scored two shorthanded goals to tie for the league lead and posted a +18 rating in 27 conference games, placing him first among all rookies and third among all defensemen.  Hartman was also a part of the Clark Cup championship for the Indiana Ice during his lone USHL season in 2008-09.  He posted 28 points (6g, 22a) while playing in all 60 games for the team during the regular season.

Mike Johnson, a 21-year-old goaltender from Verona, Wisconsin, and the University of Notre Dame, posted a .912 save percentage to lead all rookie netminders and place ninth overall in that category.  He finished the season with eight victories to tie for first in wins among freshmen goaltenders and his 2.57 goals-against-average also led all rookie netminders.  Johnson played one season for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders compiling a 25-12-1 record with three shutouts in 39 appearances.  His 2.39 GAA ranked fourth among all USHL goaltenders in 2008-09.

Chris Brown, a forward from the University of Michigan, rounded out the six selections for the All-Rookie Team.  For the first time since 1997 and second time ever, six different CCHA schools had one student-athlete named to the 2010 CCHA All-Rookie Team. This marks the 22nd year that the conference has named an All-Rookie Team.

Jordan Samuels-Thomas (Waterloo Black Hawks 2007-09) from Bowling Green State University and Kyle Follmer (Lincoln Stars 2006-08, Sioux City Musketeers 2005-06) of Northern Michigan University were honorable mentions for the CCHA All-Rookie Team.
