Waterloo, IA-Former Waterloo Black Hawk defenseman Reid Cashman was one of four players assigned to the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate team of the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, last week.
Cashman, a native of Red Wing, Minn., played 56 games for the Black Hawks in the 2002-03 season and was fourth on the team in total points with 47 points from his defensive position. Cashman also played seven games for the Black Hawks at the start of the 2003 season before committing to Quinnipiac University.
Cashman spent four seasons at Quinnipiac where he was recognized as the university's male athlete of the year for the 2006-07 academic year. He was honored as a three-time All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association during his time with the Bobcats including a first-team nod his senior season.
Former Black Hawk goalie Jeff Jakaitis signed with the Marlies the second week in September and will join fellow Waterloo alum Cashman in Toronto.
Hailing from Rochester, Minn., Jakaitis spent two seasons with the Black Hawks, playing 31 games for Waterloo during the 2002-03 campaign. While between the pipes for the Black Hawks, he garnered a .912 save percentage and carded 17 wins. He committed to Lake Superior State University in 2003 after two games with Waterloo.
Jakaitis played four seasons at Lake Superior State and ended his collegiate career with a .931 save percentage for the Lakers in the 2006-07 season.
Both Cashman and Jakaitis helped lead Waterloo to a USHL East Division title in 2003. The Marlies open play Saturday, Oct. 6 against the Rochester Americans at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto at 4:30 p.m. The Black Hawks open their regular season schedule the same night in a 7:05 showdown with the Chicago Steel at Young Arena in Waterloo.
