44 players from the League among rankings

NHL Central Scouting released their midterm rankings of top prospects eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft, and among the list of North American players are 44 that have played in the USHL this season.

The rankings are an overall look at prospects from the top junior leagues in North America, which includes the USHL.  NHL Central Scouting also produces rankings for top European players.

The highest ranked USHL player on the list is Team USA forward Sonny Milano at #16, who leads the team with 24 points (7g, 17a) in 12 USHL contests.  He is followed by his teammate Dylan Larkin at #17, who has netted nine goals in 12 USHL games this year.  Just behind them is Green Bay Gamblers forward Nick Schmaltz at #19, who leads his team with 29 points (8g, 21a) over 26 games and is coming off a record-setting performance at the World Junior A Challenge in November.

A pair of Team USA goaltenders are highly ranked as Ed Minney is listed at #2 and Blake Weyrick is at #3.  Other notable players on the list include USHL leading scorer Jake Randolph of the Omaha Lancers (#197), who has 58 points (16g, 42a) through 35 games, Matt Iacopelli of the Muskegon Lumberjacks (#132), who is currently second in the League with 23 goals, and Mark Friedman of the Waterloo Black Hawks (#133), who is currently tied among USHL defensemen in scoring with 27 points (5g, 22a).

A total of 12 USHL Member Clubs have at least one current player among the rankings, led by Team USA’s Under-18 squad with 14 players, Waterloo Black Hawks with five, and the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Dubuque Fighting Saints each with four.

In addition to the current USHL players on the midterm rankings, a total of 21 alumni of the League appear on the list by NHL Central Scouting, including Thatcher Demko (Team USA/Omaha Lancers) who is ranked the top North American goaltender in advance of the 2014 NHL Draft.
