USA Advances to Semifinals at Olympics

United States to face Canada in semifinal round



The United States men's hockey team remained perfect as their earned their fourth win in four games at the 2014 Winter Olympics by knocking off the Czech Republic 5-2 on Wednesday.



USA jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period as David Backes (Lincoln Stars, 2001-03) of the St. Louis Blues scored with just over a second remaining in the opening frame to make it a two-goal advantage heading into the first intermission.  It was the third goal of the Olympics for Backes who also dished out an assist later in the contest.



Defenseman Ryan Suter of the Minnesota Wild dished out three assists for the United States.  Suter is part of the ownership group for the USHL's newest team, the Madison Capitols.  Joe Pavelski (Waterloo Black Hawks, 2002-04) also recorded one assist and is tied for the team lead with four assists at the Olympics.



The United States will now face Canada on Friday in semifinal action with the winner advancing to the gold-medal game.  Canada, which includes USHL alum Patrick Sharp (Thunder Bay Flyers, 1998-2000), defeated Latvia by the score of 2-1 to advance to the semifinals.
