The United States Hockey League today announced the CCM and Reebok player awards for the 26th week of the 2013-14 USHL regular season.

Winners include John Simonson of the Lincoln Stars, recognized as CCM Forward of the Week; Zach Werenski of Team USA, selected as CCM Defenseman of the Week; and Eric Schierhorn of the Muskegon Lumberjacks, named Reebok Goaltender of the Week.

John Simonson, F, Lincoln Stars: The 20-year-old led the Stars to a pair of weekend victories by recording six points (3g, 3a) and a plus-three rating.  He tallied a power play goal and dished out an assist in Friday’s 5-4 overtime win against the Fargo Force.  The Grand Forks, North Dakota native then followed up with a career night, scoring a season high four points (2g, 2a) in Saturday’s 7-4 victory over Team USA.  Simonson registered a point on each of the last four goals of the game for the Stars.  Playing in his first USHL season, the University of North Dakota commit has totaled 50 points (23g, 27a) in 51 games, tying for 13th in League scoring.  He has recorded at least one point in 14 of his last 15 games, compiling 23 total points (12g, 11a) over that span.

Zach Werenski, D, Team USA: The defenseman had a huge weekend for Team USA’s Under-17 squad, producing five points (3g, 2a) and a plus-four rating over two contests.  He had three points (2g, 1a) in the first period of Saturday’s 7-4 loss to Lincoln, including two goals in a span of 2:01 which were his first two USHL career goals.  The 16-year-old then recorded two points (1g, 1a) in the third period of the 5-3 win against the Omaha Lancers on Sunday.  Werenski is a native of Grosse Pointe, Michigan and has totaled 15 points (3g, 12a) in 28 USHL contests this season.  Over his last five games in the USHL, he has compiled a plus-eight rating and helped Team USA to a 4-1-0 record during that span.

Eric Schierhorn, G, Muskegon Lumberjacks: The 18-year-old posted a 1.00 goals-against-average and .967 save percentage in leading the Lumberjacks to a weekend sweep of the Youngstown Phantoms.  He turned aside 19 shots in Friday’s 5-1 victory before making 40 saves in the 2-1 win on Saturday.  It was the seventh time this season he had made at least 40 saves in a game.  Over the two-game sweep, the goaltender helped deny all nine power play opportunities for Youngstown.  The Anchorage, Alaska native has won each of his last six appearances, producing a 1.75 GAA and .946 SV% over that span.  Schierhorn has posted a 17-14-1 record in 34 games this season, ranking eighth in victories among USHL goaltenders.
