The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Stephen Johns to a two-year NHL entry-level contract while the Buffalo Sabres inked defenseman Jack McCabe to a three-year deal.
Johns spent the 2009-10 season in the USHL with Team USA, their inaugural season in the League, and put up eight points (1g, 7a) and a plus-12 rating over 23 USHL contests with the Under-18 squad. The defenseman scored his lone USHL on December 19th, 2009 during a 9-3 win over the Youngstown Phantoms. On three occasions that season, he finished a game with a plus-three rating. In April of that year, he helped Team USA capture gold at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
Following that season, Johns was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. The 21-year-old from Wampum, Pennsylvania recently completed a four-year collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame where he accumulated 57 points (15g, 42a) over 164 games at the school. He recorded 20 points (8g, 12a) in 40 games this season, helping Notre Dame reach the NCAA Tournament for the third time in his four years.

McCabe recorded 11 points (2g, 9a) in 54 USHL games over two seasons with Team USA (2009-11). He dished out five assists for the Under-17 squad in 2009-10 before adding six points (2g, 4a) in 19 games for the Under-18 squad in 2010-11. His first USHL goal came in a 5-2 win over the Indiana Ice on November 21st, 2010 and then added his second less than three weeks later during a 3-2 loss to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on December 10th, 2010.
The Eau Claire, Wisconsin native has spent the last three seasons playing collegiately at the University of Wisconsin. He earned All-Big Ten First Team honors after putting up 25 points (8g, 17a) in 36 games this season. He finished his college hockey career with 58 points (14g, 44a) in 100 games at the school.
McCabe was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round (44th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft after his freshman season. He was also part of the U.S. National Junior Team that won gold at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.
