Becomes first forward in Mercyhurst College history to sign NHL contract
The Phoenix Coyotes have signed forward Dan O’Donoghue to a two-year NHL entry-level contract following the completion of his collegiate career.
O’Donoghue spent part of the 2009-10 season in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers and scored eight points (6g, 2a) over 39 regular season games. His first goal in the League was the game-winner in the 5-2 victory for the Buccaneers over the Green Bay Gamblers on October 31st, 2009. The Port Jefferson, New York native then scored two goals in his final USHL game, a 7-4 loss to Green Bay on January 30th, 2010.
The 23-year-old recently completed a four-year career at Mercyhurst College where he put up 119 points (45g, 74a) in 155 games at the school. He tied for the team lead in scoring this season with 43 points (15g, 28a) over 38 games, tied for 18th overall in NCAA Division I hockey. He was named the Top Defensive Forward in the Atlantic Hockey Association and the 6-5 forward also earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team.
O’Donoghue is the first forward in the history of Mercyhurst College to sign a NHL contract, joining the four previous signings that were all defensemen.
