Three years after finishing his USHL career with the Youngstown Phantoms, Jiri Sekac made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens.

Forward Jiri Sekac made his NHL debut on Wednesday night when he took the ice for the Montreal Canadiens to open the 2014-15 NHL season.

Sekac logged 12:13 of ice time in his first NHL contest as the Canadiens earned a 4-3 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  The 22-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Canadiens this past summer after playing the three previous seasons professionally in his native Czech Republic in the KHL.

Sekac led the Youngstown Phantoms in scoring during the 2010-11 season with 45 points (18g, 27a) in 58 games.  Four of his goals were game-winners.  He first broke into the USHL during the 2009-10 with the Phantoms and totaled 11 points (2g, 9a) in 38 games.

He is the third former Phantoms player to appear in the NHL, joining defenseman Andrej Sustr (2009-10) of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Scott Mayfield ( 2009-11) of the New York Islanders.

Two other USHL alumni were in the lineup for the Montreal Canadiens when Sekac made his NHL debut on Wednesday night – Max Pacioretty (Sioux City Musketeers, 2006-07) and Tom Gilbert (Chicago Steel, 2001-02).
