The Chicago Steel jumped to a 1-0 record in the Junior Club World Cup after a 3-0 win over Kazakhstan’s Snezhnye Barsy.
Jake Jaremko, who played 11 games for the Steel last season, started the scoring with a rebound off of a shot from the blue line. The goal came with five minutes left in the first period. Both teams played even through the first, but the Steel took over momentum outshooting Snezhnye Barsy in the final ten minutes.
Chicago returned to the second period strong, keeping possession in the Snezhnye Barsy zone. A streak of penalties, including two 5-on-3 opportunities for the Snezhnye Barsy power play and a five-minute major, but the Chicago penalty kill stayed busy blocking shots in front of rookie goaltender Daniel Vladar. Vladar, a 2014 Boston Bruins 3rd round draft selection, was starting for the first time in a Chicago Steel uniform.
Goaltender John Lethemon started the third period for the Steel and would close out the remainder of the game. Still on the penalty kill after the five-minute major, the Steel killed multiple penalties en route to victory.Defenseman Charlie Raith scored early in the period to make it 2-0 and forward Max Zimmer added an insurance goal to make it a 3-0 final.
Chicago will face Latvia’s HK Riga tomorrow at 7:00 pm (9:00 am CT). Thursday’s game against Russia’s Auto Club will be broadcasted live on YouTube. The Chicago Steel will continue to chase history as the USHL remains the only league to have a team medal in three consecutive years.
