Future USHL talent shines at U16 Camp

2000-born players gathered in Buffalo for the annual USA Hockey Development Camp where recently drafted future USHL players shined.

USA Hockey held its annual U16 Boys Development Camp in Buffalo, NY from July 9-14. The evaluation camp featured the top 2000-born players in the United States in preparation for the Five Nations Tournament to be held in Dallas, TX. Future USHL talent dominated both offensively and in net.

 

Ryan Savage (Fargo Force) led the tournament in scoring with 10 points and five goals. Savage was selected in the first round of the 2016 USHL Phase I Draft by Fargo from EC Salzburg. Savage is committed to Miami University and previously played for the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes (T1EHL).

 

Defenseman Matthew Kessel (undrafted) tied for a tournament best six assists in five games. The Bloomfield, MI native plays with the Little Caesars (HPHL) program. Also matching those six assists was forward Jeremy Davidson (Bloomington Thunder). The fifth round Bloomington selection finish one point behind Savage for the tournament’s scoring lead with nine points. Davidson was selected from Shattuck St. Mary’s (USHS) after scoring 45 points in 51 games. Prior to the USHL Draft Davidson attended the 2016 USHL Combine. Samuel Stevens (Chicago Steel) also finished one point behind savage with five goals and four assists. Stevens was selected in the third round by Chicago after a 52-point season with Shattuck St. Mary’s (USHS). Stevens also finished tied with a tournament best two game-winning goals in five games.

 

Drew DeRidder (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) led all goaltenders in the tournament with a .960 SV% and 1.20 GAA. The Fenton, MI native was selected in the third round by Cedar Rapids after an impressive season with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies (T1EHL). Deridder stopped 72 of 75 shots in five games. Tying Deridder’s impressive tournament best 1.20 GAA was Pennington, NJ native Matthew Sankner (undrafted). Sankner stopped 51 of 54 shots for a .944 SV%. Sankner previously attended the 2016 USHL Combine and played with Team Comcast (AYHL) last season.

 

Isaiah Saville (Madison Capitols) stopped 71 of 75 shots, posting an impressive .947 SV% and 1.60 GAA in five games. Saville, an Anchorage, AK native, was selected in the fifth round by the Capitols after a busy 24-game season with West Anchorage High (USHS) posting a .935 SV% and 1.25 GAA.

 

After the five-game tournament, a two-team All-Star Game was assembled on the final day of camp.

Ryan Savage (Fargo Force) led the tournament in scoring with 10 points…  Samuel Stevens (Chicago Steel) and Jeremy Davidson (Bloomington Thunder) each scored nine…  Sam Renlund (undrafted) scored eight…  Chase Mclane (Lincoln Stars) scored seven…  Justin Engelkes (Des Moines Buccaneers), Matthew Kessel (undrafted), Matt Cameron (Sioux Falls Stampede), Jack Randl (Omaha Lancers), Matthew Gould (Sioux Falls Stampede), Ben Helgeson (Waterloo Black Hawks) and Ryan Roth (Tri-City Storm) scored six points…  Shea Courtmanche (undrafted), Bryan Lockner (Muskegon Lumberjacks), TJ Walsh (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Arizona State University commit Demetrios Koumontzis (Green Bay Gamblers), University of Michigan commit Calen Kiefiuk (Bloomington Thunder), John Malone (Youngstown Phantoms), Yale University commit Curtis Hall (Youngstown Phantoms), Harvard University commit John Drury (Waterloo Black Hawks), Mckade Webster (Green Bay Gamblers), Andrew Stoneman (Waterloo Black Hawks), Sean Mcavoy (undrafted), Kyler Grundy (Sioux Falls Stampede) and Maxim Kouznetsov (undrafted) finished with five points…  Wyatt Schlaht (Lincoln Stars) finished with four goals.
