Dubuque Fighting Saints defenseman Brendan Bushy has committed to play college hockey at St. Cloud State University following his USHL career, he announced Wednesday.

“I’m really, super, super, super excited. I loved it when I visited there,” said Bushy. “I fell in love with the team, the coaches and everything that St. Cloud has to offer. It just felt right in my heart.

“Now it’s time to get back to playing hockey, and getting going on a good season.”

A native of Minnesota, Bushy previously played for Thief River Falls High School (USHS), tallying 31 points (25 G, 6 A) in his final season. He played in his first USHL regular season game last Saturday, a 2-1 overtime win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. He also played in five preseason games for the Fighting Saints.

“We are really excited for Brendan,” said Jason Lammers, head coach and general manager of the Fighting Saints. “He earned the opportunity at St. Cloud because of his attitude, work ethic, and commitment to his craft. We are excited to be a part of Brendan’s development as he grows into the player and person that he wants to be.”

With the announcement of Bushy’s commitment, the Fighting Saints now have 14 players on their roster committed to Division 1 college hockey. Bushy also joins his Dubuque teammate Cole Guttman with commitments to play for the Huskies.

St. Cloud is led by two-time USHL General Manager of the Year Bob Motzko.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 15th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2016-17.  30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in four consecutive NHL Drafts,  and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
