Bloomington Thunder forward Marko Reifenberger has announced his commitment to play college hockey at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

“It feels really good. It’s a weight lifted off my shoulders,” Reifenberger said. “It gives me more confidence going into my game that I know I’m going to play college hockey somewhere, and I’m excited that it will be at a program that’s as good as UMass Amherst."

A native of Hastings, Minnesota, Reifenberger was drafted by the Thunder with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2015 USHL Phase I Draft. Through 18 games this season, Reifenberger has tallied five points on a goal and four assists.

“I really appreciate the guidance that coach Williams and the rest of the staff has given me in this process,” Reifenberger added. “They played a big role in helping me accomplish my dream of playing college hockey.”

Prior to his time in the USHL, Reifenberger played for Hill-Murray School (USHS). He played two games with Bloomington last season as an affiliate before making the Thunder’s 23-man roster prior to the 2016-17 campaign.

“It’s a great opportunity for Marko. We were really excited he made the commitment to come this year and take the jump to the USHL,” Thunder head coach Dennis Williams said. “His game is one that I truly believe will be a great game in college. He’s strong on pucks, he’s fast. He’s got a very good skill set. He’s a type of player that has great characteristics as a leader. I can’t say enough how happy we are as a staff of his commitment to UMass. He’s going to do great things there.”

Reifenberger is the second Thunder player with a commitment to UMass, joining fellow forward Mitchell Chaffee. Reifenberger is also the 20th Thunder player on the current roster with a Division I commitment.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 15th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2016-17.  30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in four consecutive NHL Drafts,  and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
