The United States Hockey League announced the CCM Forward, Defenseman and Goaltender of the Week for Week 16 of the 2016-17 season. Sam Sternschein of the Lincoln Stars, and Cole Hults and Dryden McKay of the Madison Capitols were named Players of the Week. Sternschein tallied a hat trick on Friday and added an assist on Saturday, Hults had four points in three games over the past week, and McKay led the Capitols to a pair of victories with 60+ saves over the weekend. CCM Hockey is the official equipment provider of the USHL.
Forward: Sam Sternschein – Lincoln Stars
2 GP: 3 goals, 1 assist, +4 rating
Sternschein tallied a hat trick in Lincoln’s win over Omaha on Friday and added an assist on Saturday to complete the Stars’ home-and-home sweep of the Lancers. The Syosset, NY native now has 18 points (10G, 8A) in 30 games this season, 16 of which have come with Lincoln following a trade from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders earlier in the season. Sternschein is in his third season in the USHL and has 31 points (16G, 15A) in 82 games. Prior to his time in Lincoln, Sternschein previously played for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (USHL), Tri-City Storm (USHL), North Jersey Avalanche (AYHL), Portledge School (USHS) and the Long Island Gulls (AYHL).
Defenseman: Cole Hults – Madison Capitols
3 GP: 2 goals, 2 assists, +4 rating
On Monday, Hults scored a goal against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. On Friday against in-state rival Green Bay, he tallied a goal and assist. He added another helper in Dubuque on Saturday for a four-point week (2G, 2A). Hults now sports a four-game point streak and has 16 points (5G, 11A) in 30 games this season, fourth on the team and seventh among all USHL defensemen. He is in his third season in Madison and has 26 points (5G, 21A). Prior to his time with the Capitols, Holts played for Madison Capitols 18U (NAPHL). He is committed to Lake Superior State University and was an eighth round pick, 130th overall by the Capitols in the 2014 USHL Phase I Draft.
Goaltender: Dryden McKay – Madison Capitols
2-0-0-0, 1.98 GAA, .938 SV%
McKay stopped 37 of 39 shots in a win on Friday over the Green Bay Gamblers and followed that up with a 24-save performance in a win on Saturday at Dubuque. With the win on Saturday, McKay reached the double-digit mark in wins and now sports a 10-7-0-1 record, a 2.47 GAA and a .927 SV%. It is the first weekly award of his career. The Downers Grove, IL native is in his first full year in the USHL and was acquired by the Capitols from the Green Bay Gamblers earlier in the season. McKay is committed to Holy Cross and previously played for the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL), Corpus Christi Ice Rays (NAHL), Springfield Jr. Blues (NAHL) and Chicago Young Americans (HPHL).
