Michigan native will join teammate Pierce Crawford, 2016 USHL Rookie of the Year Cam Morrison in South Bend.

Youngstown Phantoms forward Max Ellis has announced his commitment to play college hockey at the University of Notre Dame.

“I chose Notre Dame because it was the best fit for me. The academics and hockey are amazing,” Ellis said. “Also with Notre Dame going to the Big Ten I will be close to my family and play in great conference.”

Ellis was signed to a tender by the Phantoms prior to the 2016-17 season. He has played in 42 games with Youngstown this season and has 16 points (5G, 11A) in those contests.

“We’re obviously very proud of Max Ellis and his decision,” said general manager Jason Koehler. “We saw loved what we saw in Max last season as an extremely gifted offensive scoring threat, hence we signed him to a USHL tender to make sure he became part of our program and family before heading to college. Max keeps getting better as he plays games and gets comfortable and adjusted here and we see flashes of a player that has the ability to be a top scorer in our league in the near future like some of our previous dynamic forwards our club has been fortunate to have in Youngstown and develop into the elite college players and NHL/pro prospects.”

Ellis will follow current teammate Pierce Crawford at Notre Dame and also join former Phantoms forward, 2016 USHL Rookie of the Year and Colorado Avalanche prospect Cam Morrison.

“We’re happy to have Max commit to such a great institution like Notre Dame,” Koehler said. “It’s not easy to impress the staff at South Bend, but Max has worked hard on the ice and in the classroom in order to put himself in a situation like this and a great opportunity is in front of him because of it.”

Ellis is a native of Plymouth, Michigan and previously played for Honeybaked (HPHL). He becomes the 22nd player to have played for Youngstown this season that is committed to a Division I school.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 15th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2016-17.  30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in four consecutive NHL Drafts,  and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
