Players of the Week: Week 8

Trio of players, including pair of NHL prospects, earn weekly honors.

The United States Hockey League announced the Forward, Defenseman and Goaltender of the Week for Week 8 of the 2017-18 season. Dubuque Fighting Saints forward Adam Tisdale earned his first career Player of the Week award, Muskegon Lumberjacks blueliner Clayton Phillips was named USHL Defenseman of the Week for the second time in his career and Green Bay Gamblers goaltender Maksim Zhukov picked up his fourth career weekly honor. Tisdale recorded six points last week, including a hat trick, Phillips scored two goals and added two assists in a pair of contests and Zhukov led the Gamblers to a pair of wins last week, including a 28-save shutout over the Chicago Steel on Saturday. The USHL is America’s only Tier 1 junior hockey league, and continues to lead the world in the advancement of Division I college hockey athletes.

 

Forward: Adam Tisdale - Dubuque Fighting Saints

After being held off the scoresheet Wednesday against Waterloo, Tisdale exploded over the weekend, tallying six points in two games to help the Fighting Saints to a pair of victories. The Clarkson commit dished out two assists on Friday in a 3-1 win in Madison over the Capitols before recording a hat trick, including the game-winning goal, and adding another helper as Dubuque knocked off Sioux City on Saturday. The hat trick was his second of the season, as he also scored three times on Nov. 11 against Central Illinois. Tisdale now sits with 12 points (6G, 6A) on the season, good for second among all Fighting Saints players. He also has 10 points (6G, 4A) in his last five games dating back to that hat trick against the Flying Aces on Nov. 11. The Calgary, AB native is in his first USHL season and previously played for the Canmore Eagles (AJHL). He was selected in the fifth round, 66th overall by the Fighting Saints in the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft. 

 

 

Defenseman: Clayton Phillips - Muskegon Lumberjacks

Phillips tallied two points in each of Muskegon's games last week as he scored a goal and added an assist both Wednesday in Youngstown and Saturday against Lincoln. The University of Minnesota commit now has 12 points (5G, 7A) in 14 games on the season, second on the Lumberjacks and tied for third among all USHL defenseman, and his five goals lead all USHL blueliners. Phillips has been solid since joining Muskegon in October, putting up nine points (4G, 5A) in his 11 games as a member of the Lumberjacks. This is the second weekly award of Phillips' career, as he was named USHL Defenseman of the Week on Sept. 29, 2016. Earlier this season, the Edina, MN native was named to the U.S. Junior Select Team for the World Junior A Challenge. It is the second time Phillips has been named to the team, winning a gold medal with Team USA last year. In addition to representing Team USA at the World Junior A Challenge in 2016-17, Phillips was named to the USA Hockey Ivan Hlinka Team, USA Hockey/CCM All-American Prospects Game and the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. He also recorded 20 points (7G, 13A) for the Fargo Force in 2016-17 before being selected in the third round, 93rd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2017 NHL Draft. Prior to his time in the USHL, Phillips played for Edina High School (USHS).

 

 

Goaltender: Maksim Zhukov - Green Bay Gamblers

2-0-0-0, 0.50 GAA, .980 SV%

 

Zhukov stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced on Wednesday as Green Bay knocked off Cedar Rapids 6-1 before posting his second shutout of the season, a 28-save performance, to lead the Gamblers to a 4-0 victory over the Eastern Conference-leading Chicago Steel. The Russian netminder now sports a 8-4-0-2 record, a 2.45 GAA and .912 SV%. His GAA puts his sixth among all goaltenders while his SV% ranks eighth in the USHL. He has also been busy between the pipes, facing 25 of more shots in half of his 14 appearances this year. This is fourth time Zhukov has been named Goaltender of the Week, including the second time this season (10/9/17). The uncommitted goaltender is in his second USHL season and registered a 2.25 GAA and .913 SV% in 2016-17 before being selected in the fourth round, 96th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights at the 2017 NHL Draft. Prior to his time in the USHL, Zhukov suited up for Lokomotiv-Yaroslavl in Russia.
