All 16 NCAA tournament teams have USHL graduates on their roster
The NCAA men’s hockey tournament begins this week and graduates of the USHL will have a big impact on which school becomes the national champion. A total of 201 USHL alumni are competing in the tournament, representing 48% of all the players in the field.
All 16 teams in the NCAA tournament have at least one USHL graduate, led by the University of Notre Dame with 23 alumni of the League on their roster. The top-seeded University of Minnesota has 22 USHL alumni on the roster. Among the 201 USHL alumni in the field, 64 of them are NHL Draft selections.
Each of the 16 active USHL Member Clubs have multiple former players competing in the tournament. Team USA leads the way with 32 alumni among the rosters, followed by the Waterloo Black Hawks with 24, and the Sioux Falls Stampede with 19. All but two USHL teams have at least 10 players in the tournament. The Des Moines Buccaneers and Waterloo Black Hawks both have players on 11 of the 16 teams competing, followed by the Indiana Ice, Omaha Lancers, Sioux Falls Stampede, and Team USA which all have players on 10 of the 16 NCAA teams.
Additionally, four of the 16 NCAA teams have a head coach that has previously coached in the USHL – Jim Montgomery (Dubuque Fighting Saints, 2010-13) of the University of Denver, Mike Hastings (Omaha Lancers, 1994-2008) of Minnesota State University-Mankato, Dave Hakstol (Sioux City Musketeers, 1996-2000) of the University of North Dakota, and Bob Motzko (North Iowa Huskies, 1987-91 and Sioux Falls Stampede, 1999-2001). Both Montgomery (2013, 2011) and Hastings (2008, 2001, 1998) won Clark Cup championships during their time in the USHL.
Seventeen USHL alumni on the rosters of teams in the NCAA tournament won a Clark Cup while playing in the USHL. Those 17 players are spread amongst 10 of the 16 schools competing.
