The Muskegon Lumberjacks announced that rookie defenseman Joseph Cecconi has committed to play college hockey at the University of Michigan following his USHL career.

“I decided to commit to the University of Michigan because I felt that it was the right fit for me, and the coaching staff made me feel right at home when I took my official visit to Ann Arbor,” said Cecconi.  “I loved the campus setting that Ann Arbor had to offer, and the overall atmosphere that surrounds Michigan is one of the best in the entire country.”

Cecconi joined the Lumberjacks in December after having his rights acquired from the Green Bay Gamblers, the team that selected him in the 2013 USHL Draft.  He then netted a goal in his USHL debut, a 5-3 win over the Youngstown Phantoms on December 29th.  The 16-year-old from Youngstown, New York totaled six points (2g, 4a) and a plus-one rating in 28 games this season for Muskegon.

Prior to his time in the USHL, Cecconi played youth hockey for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres organization.

The defenseman is joined by Lumberjacks teammate Cooper Marody who also committed to the University of Michigan.  Eight other players that competed in the USHL this season also have plans to attend the school; Alex Talcott (Indiana Ice), Tony Calderone (Sioux Falls Stampede), Hayden Lavigne (Tri-City Storm), Cutler Martin (Tri-City Storm), Nick Boka (Team USA), Dylan Larkin (Team USA), Brendan Warren (Team USA), and Kyle Connor (Youngstown Phantoms).

The University of Michigan is part of the newly-formed Big Ten Conference for hockey and had 19 USHL alumni on the Wolverines roster this season; Steve Racine (Chicago/Lincoln), Mike Chiasson (Omaha Lancers), Kevin Clare (Team USA), Michael Downing (Dubuque Fighting Saints), Luke Moffatt (Team USA), Justin Selman (Sioux Falls/Des Moines), Cristoval Nieves (Indiana Ice), Tyler Motte (Team USA), Evan Allen (Team USA), J.T.
