08/16/2016, 3:45pm CDT

USHL announced details for the inaugural Fall Classic Youth Tournament in Pittsburgh, PA.

The United States Hockey League announced the full schedule and teams playing in the inaugural Fall Classic East Youth Tournament. Sixteen of the nation’s top youth U14 teams will compete in group play, followed by a semifinal and final game to determine a champion. All games will take place at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, training facility of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Baierl Ice Complex in Cranberry, PA from September 16th through the 18th. Youth players will have access to all USHL games at the Fall Classic East.

“The U14 Fall Classic offers elite players a first glimpse into what they are working towards,” said Director of Player Development and Recruitment Doug Christiansen. “Having 16 of the top teams in the country gives players and teams an opportunity to see where they stack up nationally while playing in front of USHL and NCAA scouts.”

USHL Central Scouting determined the top teams in the nation based on projected rosters and club pedigree from previous seasons. Once the 16 teams were selected, the department then determined seeding and group placement.

“This age group represents the future of USHL hockey,” said President and Commissioner Bob Fallen. “Elite programs have elite players who will soon have to make choices about their future. Giving these young men and their families access to the Tier 1 on-ice product and having the opportunity to inform them about their options is invaluable to the USHL.”

Each team will play all three opponents in its group, collecting points based on wins, overtime wins and overtime losses. The top teams in each group will then advance to the Semifinals, while the other teams will compete in one last game for final standings. The championship will be determined with a final game, while final standings 3-16 will be determined by final points earned based upon records.
