The United States Hockey League announced the dates for the invitation-only 2017 USHL Development Series Combine. The USHL Combines are part of the USHL Development Series that features competitive and educational events for elite young talent. The USHL Combine was first created in 2010 to annually showcase young players to league general managers, coaches and scouts, and to educate players about opportunities in the nation’s top junior hockey league. 84 players who attended a USHL Development Series event during the 2015-16 season were selected in the 2016 USHL Draft.
The USHL combine is the only League event in which every USHL team is represented by a coach, general manager, or scout. The dates for the 2017 USHL Combine are organized by a player’s birth year:
2001 & 2002 Birth Years (compete separately): April 20-23, 2017
1999 & 2000 Birth Years: April 27-30, 2017
2003 Birth Years: To be announced at a later date
All USHL Combines are held at the Arctic Ice Arena in Orland Park, IL.
In order to be considered for invitation, players should complete the online questionnaire HERE.
The April Combines are an opportunity for a player to make a final impression on coaches and scouts prior to the USHL Draft – the key point of entry for players into USA Hockey’s only Tier 1 junior league. Players born in 2001 are eligible for the USHL Phase I Draft on May 1, 2017. All players born between 1997-2001 are eligible for the USHL Phase II Draft on May 2, 2017.
“The USHL Combine is an outstanding opportunity for players to be scouted while being instructed by USHL coaches and staff,” said Doug Christiansen, USHL Director of Player Development and Recruitment. “The fact that over 40 2000 Combine veterans were drafted in 2016 shows that USHL coaches are taking notice of the talent at the Combine. The goal is to give players an outstanding experience while competing against many of the best players throughout the United States and beyond.”
The 2002 Combine is a great opportunity for players who are just starting their draft process in preparation for the 2018 USHL Draft. Players can learn from and talk with USHL coaches and general managers as they look ahead to their first year of USHL Draft eligibility. The Combine provides a unique opportunity to gain exposure and experience of playing against some of the best talent in the county in their respective age group, and give players benchmarks on their personal development as it relates to pursuing a junior hockey career in the USHL. At all ages, every participant receives the contact information of their coach to use as a resource following the combine to help them develop as a player on and off the ice.
Participating players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills while playing in a minimum of four games in front of USHL coaches and scouts, as well as NCAA coaches. Invitees will also have the opportunity to participate in both on-ice and off-ice testing.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 15th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2016-17. 30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in four consecutive NHL Drafts, and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
