24 players with USHL experience named to U.S. Preliminary Roster for WJC, 22 of those players with NCAA experience.

24 players with USHL experience were named to the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team Preliminary Roster in preparation for the World Junior Championship. The announcement was made today by USA Hockey on NHL Network. The roster is auditioning for a spot on the final 23-man roster that will represent the United States in the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship from Dec. 26, 2016 – Jan. 5, 2017, in Montreal and Toronto, Canada.

22 players are currently playing, or have experience playing college hockey. 17 of the 24 former USHL players named to the roster were selected in the first three rounds of their respective NHL Draft, with eight players drafted in the first round. At least one player with USHL experience has been featured on every U.S. World Junior Championship roster since 1995. The USHL has had 10 or more players featured on Team USA since 2012, with a record 19 players on the 2014 team.

Notable players named to the preliminary roster include Brock Boeser (Waterloo Black Hawks), Kieffer Bellows (Team USA) and Jack Ahcan (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders). Boeser was named to the 2015 All-USHL First Team and 2015 All-USHL First Rookie Team prior to winning an NCAA Championship last season with the University of North Dakota. Bellows was also named to the All-USHL Rookie Team after winning 2015 USHL Rookie of the Year and a Clark Cup championship with the Sioux Falls Stampede. Ahcan won 2016 USHL Defenseman of the Year honors and was named to the 2016 All-USHL First Team. Tanner Laczynski (Lincoln Stars) was named to the 2016 All-USHL Second Team after splitting the season between the Chicago Steel and Lincoln Stars.

Head coach Bob Motzko played for the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Waterloo Black Hawks, and also coached the North Iowa Huskies and Sioux Falls Stampede. Motzko was named USHL General Manager of the Year in both 1989 and 2000. General Manager Jim Johannson coached the Twin Cities Vulcans. Assistant coaches Grant Potulny (Lincoln Stars), Kris Mayote (Sioux City) and Steve Miller (Madison Capitols) all played in the USHL.

The players will attend training camp Dec. 16-20 at HarborCenter in Buffalo, New York, followed by an additional camp in Oshawa, Ontario, from Dec. 20-24. The complete U.S. National Junior Team Preliminary Roster can be found here.
