Madison Capitols defenseman Philip Nyberg has committed to play college hockey at the University of Connecticut.

Nyberg is in his first season with Madison.  The 6-foot-4, 192-pound native of Linkoping, Sweden has dressed in 23 games with the Capitols and tallied two goals and six assists in those contests.

“I’m excited about my commitment to the University of Connecticut,” said Nyberg.  “I think it’s a great place and I know it will be a good place for me to develop my hockey career.”

Nyberg was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. Prior to playing in Madison, Nyberg was a member of Linkoping HC in Sweden.  He will start his college career with the Huskies in 2017, according to the team.

With Nyberg's annoucement, the Capitols now have 14 Division 1 college commits on their roster.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 15th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2016-17.  30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in four consecutive NHL Drafts,  and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
