Thunder captain Tarek Baker tallied his 11th goal of the season on the power play to give Bloomington a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play. Youngstown responded early in the second period with an Austin Pooley tally to tie the game, but Ethan Somoza regained the lead for the Thunder just two minutes later. It remained a 2-1 Bloomington lead until late in the middle frame, when Pooley, playing in his 200th career USHL game, scored his second goal of the contest with just over six minutes to play in the period to make it a 2-2 game through 40 minutes. After a scoreless third period and overtime session, the teams headed to a shootout. Dominick Dockery scored the only goal of the 10-round shootout to give Youngstown the victory. Ivan Kulbakov stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced, in addition to all 10 attempts in the shootout, for his 16th victory of the season. The Phantoms are now alone in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 15th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2016-17.  30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in four consecutive NHL Drafts,  and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
