Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman Grant Gabriele announced his commitment to Ohio State University following his time in the USHL.

“I truly believe Ohio State University gives me the best chance at making that dream a reality while receiving an elite education through programs internationally recognized,” Gabriele said in an interview with MiHockey.

“Considering my location in the Midwest, I grew up watching Big Ten teams and always had a dream of playing. My decision was a no-brainer. I am so unbelievably grateful for this opportunity and am just ready to put on the Buckeye sweater.”

The six-foot-two-inch native of Brighton, Michigan joined the Black Hawks just after Christmas and has nine points (3G, 6A) along with a +3 rating in 19 games. Six of Gabriele’s points (1G, 5A) have been recorded in the last six games.

“Experience and size are two of the valuable assets Grant brought to Waterloo just after Christmas,” said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O’Handley.  “He has played in every game since the holiday break and given us valuable minutes both at even-strength and on special teams.”

Prior to his time in Waterloo, Gabriele played for the Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL), Chicago Steel (USHL), Omaha Lancers (USHL), Team USA (USHL) and Victory Honda (T1EHL). He will join former Black Hawks John Wiitala, Ronnie Hein and Sam McCormick in Columbus.

Waterloo now has 19 players with NCAA Division I college commitments.

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrates its 15th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2016-17.  30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in four consecutive NHL Drafts,  and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
