06/24/2017, 2:00pm CDT

40 players drafted who played in the USHL this season set a league record.

The USHL was well-represented at the NHL Draft, as 48 players with USHL ties were selected at the 2017 NHL Draft in Chicago, IL. In total, 40 USHL players that played in the USHL this season were selected in addition to eight alumni. Those 40 players selected set a league record for most NHL Draft selections from the USHL, breaking the previous mark of 37 set at the 2014 and 2015 NHL Drafts. The 2017 NHL Draft marks the fifth consecutive season that 30 or more players have been selected from the USHL. In addition, all 17 member clubs had at least one player selected in the NHL Draft who played in the league during the 2016-17 season.

Leading the way for the USHL at the NHL Draft was Casey Mittelstadt, who was selected eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres. Mittelstadt joins an organization led behind the bench by Phil Housley (St. Paul Vulcans), the highest drafted player from the USHL, excluding alumni. Other notable players to be drafted in the first round included Josh Norris (Team USA), Ryan Poehling (Lincoln Stars), Jake Oettinger (Team USA), Shane Bowers (Waterloo Black Hawks) and Eeli Tolvanen (Sioux City Musketeers).

The USHL had at least four players selected in every round of the 2017 NHL Draft, including 26 players who were drafted in the first four rounds.

College hockey was also well-represented at the draft, as 45 of the 48 players who were chosen are either committed to Division 1 college hockey or have already begun their college hockey careers.
