Waterloo Black Hawks forward Ethan Johnson will join the Mercyhurst University Lakers for the 2018-19 college hockey season, the team announced Friday.
The 20-year-old spent two seasons with Waterloo and becomes the 19th member of last season’s team to make a college commitment.
Last month, Johnson scored the first goal during the Hawks’ postseason run. He finished the playoffs with two goals and an assist during seven appearances.
Over two seasons in Waterloo, Johnson played in 102 regular season games. He notched 38 points (14 goals, 24 points) and had a cumulative plus/minus rating of +18.
On October 23, 2017, the United States Hockey League recognized Johnson as its Forward of the Week. In two wins that weekend, Johnson had a hand in five of eight Waterloo goals. That included scoring the game-winner on the road against the Sioux Falls Stampede. He had also assisted on the third period, game-tying score to spark the come-from-behind effort.
A native of Newfolden, MN, Johnson played for Thief River Falls High from 2012-16, recording 138 points (82G, 56A) in 142 games.
Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the USHL celebrated its 16th season as the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league in 2017-18. 30 or more players from the USHL have been selected in five consecutive NHL Drafts, and more than 400 players on team rosters last season committed to NCAA Division I schools, further establishing the USHL as the world’s foremost producer of junior hockey talent.
